Acceptable Imbalance of Sound-Object Levels for Off-Center Listeners in Immersive Sound Reinforcement (en)

Abstract:
Sound reinforcement systems typically restrict the variation of the direct sound pressure level to 6 dB, from the closest to the most distant listening positions. This contribution considers an immersive surround setup, of which each loudspeaker reinforces a different sound object in a mix. Off-center distance differences can cause a level imbalance biased towards the closest loudspeaker. This perceptual study investigates the requirements on direct-sound coverage with regard to distance, in order to preserve a balanced direct-sound mix.
