Abstract:
Modern videogames generally feature an elaborate sound design that utilizes music, character sound (e.g., sound of steps when the character is walking) and ambient sound to deepen the game experience, enhance immersion and increase fun. While past research has primarily focused on the effects of background music, the goal of the present experimental laboratory study was to investigate the influence of character sound and ambient sound on avatar identification, subjective immersion (presence) and fun during gameplay. Each participant (N = 32) played the videogame “Evergate” in four different sound conditions (ambient sound on/off, character sound on/off) and fun, subjectively perceived immersion and avatar identification were measured using a self-report questionnaire.A positive influence of ambient sound on subjective immersion was observed and the presence of character sound led to increased avatar identification in the absence of ambient sound. No significant differences in fun between the different sound conditions were evident, but positive correlations between avatar identification, subjective immersion and fun respectively, suggest that the sound design might have an indirect effect on fun. These results demonstrate the influence of background sounds on subjective immersion and game experience – and thus underline their importance for the sound design of games.
