Abstract: In this paper, a phase gradient material of high sound absorption and transmission loss is proposed and validated. The material is composed by cells containing air and porous materials with different lengths, forming a unit cell. Firstly, an efficient analytical model was proposed to predict the reflection and transmission coefficient of such a system. This model makes use of admittance relations and a wave decomposition of the periodic scattered and transmitted field. Furthermore, this model is used to predict the ideal phase gradients on both sides of the material to obtain both a high transmission coefficient and a high reflection coefficient. Based on the insights gained, trade-offs are made to arrive at a realistic material with physical material parameters. Lastly, the design is verified and validated.
