Noise Cancellation in Wind Farm Using Acoustic metamaterials (en)

The adverse health impacts of noise emitted from wind turbines on nearby human habitats and wildlife have become a major roadblock in harnessing wind energy to its crucial role. Existing strategies modulated the wind turbine blades to reduce noise, but they compromised the energy output of the wind farms. Here, we have proposed a novel approach utilizing acoustic metamaterials (AMM) to attenuate the noise propagating towards nearby human habitats and reduce it to acceptable limits. The proposed approach combines acoustic holography and a genetic algorithm approach to determine the optimal layout (position, size, and number) of AMMs inside a wind farm. Moreover, this work presents a novel idea of segmented AMM to reduce AMM area to a bare minimum. A significant reduction of 91% (in Pa) in acoustic pressure is achieved at the target location, acquiring 50% of the AMM area for a single wind turbine case, and the same model can be extended for multiple turbine layouts inside a wind farm. This work opens futuristic pathways for installing AMMs as aesthetically pleasing sculptures nearby human habitats to enhance visual appeal to the environment and enables the placement of additional wind turbines to enhance the energy throughput with minimum noise.
