Abstract: Cortical tracking of speech features as measured with M/EEG is modulated by the attentional state of the listener. In competing-talker situations, the relative strength of cortical tracking of attended and unattended speech can be used to decode which talker a listener is attending to. This attention decoding raises the possibility of a closed-loop brain-speech system that enhances the speech sounds that a listener is attending to, e.g. in a neuro-steered hearing aid. In this talk, attention decoding techniques are introduced and results of our work with closed-loop attention steering presented. Effects of hearing impairment on attention-driven speech tracking will be discussed: to which degree is attentional modulation of speech tracking influenced by changes in the cortical representation of the sensory signal that occurs with hearing loss?
