Abstract: Power losses resulting from inefficiencies in audio amplifier operations cause heat to be generated. When this is poorly dissipated, device temperatures can reach excessive levels wherein components are damaged in a process known as thermal runaway. Audio amplifiers therefore often rely on thermal shutdown mechanisms to disable operations when internal temperatures exceed a predefined limit. As the obtrusive application of such features negatively affects the listening experience, a more subtle approach is clearly required. In this research project, a lumped element electrothermal model which can be used to predict audio amplifier internal thermal dynamics in real-time is developed. This model is intended to facilitate the development of an adaptive protection algorithm which prevents overheating using predictions of internal thermal dynamics. The parameters for the proposed model are identified using curve-fitting techniques on measurements performed directly on an amplifier. The performance of the model is then validated with a comparison of simulation and measurement responses.
