Cavitation Bubble Dynamics in a Stagnation Point Flow (en)

Abstract: We study single laser-induced cavitation bubbles close to a solid boundary in a stagnation point flow. Here, a rich bubble dynamics develops as during its dynamics the bubble translates with the flow, and two disparate pressure gradients from boundary and stagnation flow are acting on the bubble. For example, the bubble shows an hourglass shape as known from the dynamics at elastic boundaries or needle-like high-speed jetting of velocities above 1000 m/s, even at rather large stand-off distances. While numerical studies already show some of these effects, experimental data are lacking. Here we show high-speed imaging of the bubble dynamics and also discuss consequences concerning the interaction with the solid boundary from this particular bubble dynamics. To this end a parametric study varying the flow velocity and the bubble to wall stand-off is carried out. The results suggest that the enriched bubble dynamics may allow tailored applicability in process technology.
