Abstract: Ambisonic order weighting can be used to control the relation between the attenuation of the sidelobes and the width of the mainlobe in Ambisonic playback. Basic weighting is known to create the narrowest mainlobe for precise playback in a single-listener environment, and max-rE weighting is used to effectively attenuate disturbing sidelobes in large audiences. However, controlling the mainlobe width affects the number of coherently interfering, neighboring loudspeakers, and thus changes the resulting signal spectrum. We study this coloration for different order weightings, loudspeaker densities, and playback rooms with the goal to find a simple model to predict and equalize the coloration.
