Modeling the Listening Area of Envelopment (en)

Abstract: Listener envelopment requires a low interaural level difference and a low interaural coherence as perceptual cues, which is challenging to reproduce over an extended listening area using multi-channel loudspeaker systems. In this contribution we establish and evaluate a vector-based model, which allows us to efficiently predict envelopment across the listening area for arbitrary 2D and 3D loudspeaker systems. The model incorporates the free-field sound pressure level decay of the individual loudspeakers, which is an important design criterion for large-scale loudspeaker systems.
