Abstract: To be able to compare head-tracked binaural auralizations via headphones to a loudspeaker rendering in the real room, headphones should ideally not influence the sound field produced by the loudspeaker. Often, extra-aural headphones are used as a practical solution. In interactive virtual environments participants typically have to wear both, headphones as well as a head mounted display (HMD). Combining them can be complicated and a proper headphone placement for optimal acoustic rendering is not guaranteed. To account for this, we designed a 3D-printed support, mounting the extra-aural AKG K1000 to a HTC Vive Pro eye HMD. The 3D-printed support enables a better placement of the headphones that is reproducible by marking the fastening of the HMD. Additionally, this supports reproducible headphone equalisation filters (HPEQs) which are needed for presenting binaural head-tracked auralizations. In contrast to over-the-ear headphones, the hovering position of the headphone allows to measure HPEQs right before listening to the auralizations without repositioning the headphones. In this study we measured individual HPEQs on different days for both extra-aural as well as over-the-ear headphones to compare the reproducibility. It turns out that the 3D-printed support helps to reduce the spectral difference due to headphone repositioning.
