Abstract: One mega trend in automotive audio systems is providing personal audio zones for multiple passengers. This enables individual audio experiences for the passengers on the one hand side and complies with the requirement of improved privacy measures on the other hand. Both aspects demand high-class audio playback with sound transducers located close to the passenger’s ears. Current approaches comprise conventional loudspeakers that are integrated into the seat’s headrest. This comes with drawbacks, such as limited low-frequency sound radiation and the need for perforation of the seat covers. The team of Acoustic Solutions at Continental Engineering Services GmbH develops a novel approach called “Ac2ated Sound”. It utilizes electrodynamic actuators to excite existing structures in the vehicle to radiate high-end sound. Using Ac2ated Sound actuators enables invisible integration of the sound transducers into structures, such as A-pillar trims, headliners, and seats. In this work, the general concept of actuator-based sound systems will be presented, including a discussion on chances and risks. Furthermore, the methodology of integrating actuators into a seat’s headrest is introduced. Finally, measurement results of a set of actuators integrated into a vehicle’s seat will be presented and discussed.
