Abstract: According to studies by the German Umweltbundesamt (UBA) many people are annoyed by noise. Among different sources of noise from, e.g. industry or neighbours, it is particularly the traffic noise, which creates discomfort for most people. In addition, WHO reports underline the severe public health burden as a consequence of environmental and road traffic noise even though there are a number of stringent regulations and standards established in the European Union. However, most of these regulations include noise limit values either for the emitting source or the immission level in front of the building or façade respectively. Often, these limit values are simulated or measured as A-weighted time-averaged energy-equivalent value LAeq. Nevertheless, it is well known from many psycho-acoustic studies, that the perceived noise annoyance is rather related to the loudness than to an LAeq. In this study, typical traffic noise of different vehicles passing by was measured in front of buildings and simultaneously inside. The noise events in front of the building were then normalized to the same LAeq. The same normalization factors were applied to the noise events measured inside the building, which were finally used in a listening test to determine the annoyance of people.
