Comparison of measurements and simulations of the focussing phenomenon in a discretized hemispherical building - La Geode, Paris (en)

Abstract: Abstract: La Géode is a monumental building, unique of its kind, a fusion of art, architecture and sound. Although it was a masterpiece at first, the modern flavour of the building evaporated, along with economic and governance changes, renovations are currently taking place. The aim of the project is to predict the best possible solution for the modernised interior of the structure, adapted to the up to date IMAX cinema halls, offering an unforgettable experience to its visitors. This study presents the involvement of room acoustics in the project. A theoretical overview of the acoustic phenomena in the hemispheric volume is presented and MLSSA measurements were conducted. Four sequential complexities of geometrical model were constructed to simulate the Room Impulse Response, as close as possible to the measured, taking into account the focussing phenomena. The initial simulations were done using Geometrical Acoustics Software (CATT Acoustics) and the great similarities between the measurements results and the simulations confirmed the relevance of the calculations for the design of the room. The geometry complexity and its effects on the results are studied in detail and comparisons with measurements are shown.Key words: La Géode; room acoustics; RIR measurements; GA; CATT Acoustics simulations.
