Abstract: Modal Analysis is a well established tool in structural dynamics. Also acoustics make beneficial use of the modal behaviour as the surface velocities determine the sound radiation. The current parameter estimation methods determine the modal behaviour on the basis of a linear model. This is the state of the art. The extension to a non-linear modal theory is not possible in general. The presented paper will show a new elegant method to extend modal analysis to systems with fractional derivatives. By using m/n derivatives that are not full integer numbers, the system behaviour can be described in more detail. This helps especially for the improved description of damping like in composites, rubber, wood or additive manufacturing.The modal theory behind fractional systems is shown with numerical and experimental examples. In general the system description will be by a power series of eigenvalues with extended eigenvectors and according modal scaling factors.
